PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened early Saturday morning.

According to a release, police were called to the Walmart on Silver Spring Street around 1 a.m. for a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a man inside a large box truck who had been shot.

A person who officers believed was the suspect in the shooting was still on scene. Police were able to take that person in to custody without an incident.

The victim, who is only being identified as a 51-year-old man at this time, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

“At this time, it appears the shooting was the result of a physical altercation that took place between the suspect and victim, who are known to each other, and were at Walmart to work on the floors,” Providence Police said in a release.

When asked about the incident, a spokesperson from Walmart said in a statement, “We are aware of this incident. We’ll work with police as they investigate and refer additional questions to them.”

Providence Police Detectives are investigating this incident.

This is the 5th homicide in Providence this year.
