Provincetown is the best place for bicycling in Massachusetts, according to a new ranking of large and small biking destinations.

    • According to PeopleForBikes' annual city ratings, P-Town scored 96 points, the second highest rating in the country among cities with fewer than 50,000 people.
    • Cambridge took second place nationally for cities with between 50,000 and 300,000 people.

Why it matters: Boston itself doesn't even come close to those two, scoring only 34 points.

    • It's the 514th best place to bike and the sixth best municipality to bike in Massachusetts, according to the methodology.

What they found : PeopleForBikes' annual city ratings give each municipality a 0-100 score.

    • More than 2,500 cities worldwide are judged.

The group looks at factors including safe speeds, protected bike lanes, intersection treatments, network connections and space for biking and walking.

Zoom in: As anyone who's attempted to drive down Commercial Street on a busy day can tell you, Provincetown is a cycle and pedestrian-first town.

    • Most of P-Town is no more than a few minutes away by bike from the center of town and drivers usually give cyclists room to operate.
