Pueblo police officers save woman in crisis from bridge

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) said two officers’ efforts saved a woman’s life while she was in crisis on Sunday, May 5.

PPD said on Sunday at around 11 a.m. officers were called to the 400 block of East 8th Street about a woman standing on the outer portion of the E. 8th St. bridge over Fountain Creek, and it appeared as if she was going to jump.

When officers arrived they found the woman on the outside of the bridge and sitting on a pipe, and the gap between the pipe and the bridge was large enough for the woman to fall through. Officers tried to get the woman to talk to them and bring her back to safety, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The woman then moved around and dangled her legs between the pipe and bridge and PPD said one officer saw she was sliding further down. When the woman reached her hand up and grabbed the bridge, one officer used the opportunity to grab her wrist to pull her up.

The second officer immediately helped pull the woman back over the railing and onto the bridge to safety. PPD commends the work of its officers for their quick thinking and the help they provided to a citizen in crisis.
