Pueblo police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting on July 7 in which a child was allegedly shot during a confrontation over a stolen bike.

Michael Santistevan, 41, was arrested by police July 18 and charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder, according to a Monday news release from the Pueblo Police Department.

Officers were called to the scene in the 1700 block of Constitution Road on a report of shots fired and learned that a child had been shot in the back. The bullet had decelerated enough to only cause minor injuries, according to police, but the child was taken to a local hospital for treatment as a precaution and later released.

Police said in Monday’s release that the shooting occurred as a man and his two children were traveling through the area looking for the children’s stolen bicycle.

“They observed what they believed to be their bicycle in front of a residence in the 1700 block of Constitution Road. The father confronted several people in front of the residence about the bicycle. During the confrontation, a male inside the residence shot at the father’s vehicle as they drove away,” police said in the release.

The Pueblo PD SWAT Team was activated to assist in handling a barricaded suspect at the residence, but Santistevan was not initially located by police.

He was found days later on July 18, walking in the area of Troy Avenue and Oakshire Lane, and was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit, according to police.

Santistevan is not legally permitted to own a firearm. Court records show that in August 2020, he pleaded guilty to possession of a weapon by a previous offender and was sentenced to one year in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

As of July 23, Santistevan was being held in the Pueblo County jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond. His first appearance in court is scheduled for July 29 in the court of Judge Thomas Flesher.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked by Pueblo PD to contact Detective Hector Herrera at 719-601-7023. To remain anonymous, contact Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-STOP (719-542-7687) or pueblocrimestoppers.com. Information that leads to a felony arrest could qualify its submitting party for a cash reward.
