WEST JEFFERSON, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — It’s a character in downtown West Jefferson. The Parkway Twin Theater on East Main Street has been the town’s central movie theater for decades.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’ll make it,” the theater’s operator said.

Setting his stage fright aside is Tony Eldreth. If the theater had credits played at the end of every day, his name would be the only one on the screen.

“We’re independent, all me,” Eldreth laughed.

For the last 40 years, it’s all been Tony. Though some of the roles have stayed the same, the movie posters of old blockbusters are a small reminder of what has changed on the big screen.

“It’s really rough on us individually because the fact is, they know two-to-three weeks down the road they’re going to get to see it on TV,” he said.

Tony re-did the seats and the floor. They split the movie theater into two to show more motion pictures. Though blockbusters aren’t what they used to be, Tony still believes in the magic of movies and the staying power of the Parkway Twin.

“Yes, I do. I sure do,” Tony said.

There are some perks when you’re the main character here for the last 40 years.

“Now this is the truth: I’ve been here 40 years,” Eldreth said. “I guess I’ve eaten popcorn every day I’ve been here. It might be a handful or as big as that bucket right there, but I guess I’ve eaten it every day,” said Tony.

So, grab a box of candy or a bucket of popcorn… and enjoy the show.
