UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Monroe officers and Union County deputies worked together to arrest a man who, police say, potentially was impersonating a police officer.

Around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, detectives with Monroe Police Department’s Violent Crimes Task Force attempted a traffic spot on a Toyota Camry displaying a fake license plate.

The driver of the Camry attempted to back out of a parking spot when he realized he was being stopped.

The driver intentionally struck a Union County Sheriff’s Deputy patrol car and fled from the traffic stop.

A pursuit ensued, led by Monroe Police Department and Union County deputies into Mecklenburg County via I-485. During the pursuit, the driver of the Camry drove recklessly, driving at high speeds, running numerous red lights and into oncoming traffic.

Police say the suspect was also throwing drugs out of the window of the vehicle.

The pursuit continued onto Providence Road where a Union County deputy performed a forced vehicle stop which disabled the suspect’s vehicle and ended the chase.

The driver was arrested and later identified as Roger Desmond Burns III, of Indian Trail.

Officers recovered the drugs thrown from the vehicle and found bags of methamphetamine and fentanyl. Upon search of the vehicle, which was reportedly stolen from York County, S.C., they discovered items that were stolen from a federal agency including, a bulletproof vest, handcuffs, an agent’s credentials and police patches as well as a replica handgun, holster and removable strobe lights.

Burns was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, trafficking opiates, destruction of evidence, possession of methamphetamine and felony flee to elude arrest.

He is currently in custody at the Union County Detention Center with a $750k secured bond.
