CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Just how bad are the roads in North Carolina?

A new report by the non-profit ‘Trip’ reveals nearly 40 percent are in poor or mediocre condition. The report even broke it down by city.

For the Charlotte metro, roads were graded as 23 percent poor, the worst out of the five cities studied. Twenty-seven percent were found to be mediocre, 20 percent fair, and 30 percent good.

The city with the best roads is Asheville. The report also says statewide traffic fatalities were up 20 percent from 2019 to 2023 and that 7 percent of the state’s bridges are rated poor or in structurally deficient condition. Here in Charlotte, it’s 5 percent.

Trip also estimates that due to the poor road conditions it costs drivers $5 billion in total. Individually for drivers in Charlotte, that’s $784, in addition to losing money from sitting in traffic congestion.
