The nation’s adults go to the polls on Nov. 5, but the students at Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary in the Queen Creek Unified School District have already elected their officials.

On Friday, Aug. 10, KMBE held its student officer elections. Students running for office created campaigns that included posters and videos in which they introduced themselves and shared the policies they would like to implement for their school, according to a district press release.

One candidate, Raelin C., encouraged student voters to “Take a Shot” and vote for her for as historian. For her campaign efforts, she worked to be a friendly face for younger students, making them feel included and welcomed at school. Raelin also “would always show integrity” and be an example to her classmates. In past elections, Raelin has given out pencils to spread awareness about her running as a student officer.

“Raelin promised to create a family dance in addition to the traditional father-daughter and mother-son dances. She stated that her mom only has daughters and wants to give all mothers with the same family dynamic the option to attend dances as well,” the release stated.

Raelin also advocated for introducing additional sports options. She shared that her love for basketball started when she first entered elementary school and she hopes to share her love of sports with others.

Garrett G. campaigned for president with the slogan “Nacho average candidate” and encouraged students to vote for him for “El Presidente.”

“He was inspired to run for student council president because he was on the student council the previous year and really enjoyed it. Garrett’s goal is to make KMBE to be the best school it can be, all while being as fun as possible,” the release continued.

The KMBE election is an example of how QCUSD promotes civic responsibility and encourages students to practice voting.
