Alonso homers to start the Mets on their way to a 15-2 blowout against the Twins
NEW YORK — Pete Alonso homered to start a six-run fourth inning and the New York Mets blew out the Minnesota Twins 15-2, turning the opener of an interleague series between playoff contenders into a lopsided laugher. Jeff McNeil and Luis Torrens each drove in three runs for the Mets, who batted around twice in three innings. Every starter had at least one RBI besides newcomer Jesse Winker, who singled and scored in his first Mets start before getting lifted in the sixth. Winker was acquired from Washington in a trade finalized Sunday morning. Jose Quintana fell behind 1-0 after five pitches but kept Minnesota off the scoreboard after that, throwing six effective innings to win his second consecutive start.
Yankees, Mets ‘tied to the biggest mystery’ player at this trade deadline
The 2024 trade deadline is practically here, and the next two days are expected to be busy for both New York teams. The Yankee and Mets could each be interested in acquiring starting pitching before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. deadline, and Jeff Passan of ESPN thinks they’ll be linked to the same guy.
Mets cut reliever Jake Diekman and promote fellow lefty Matt Gage from Triple-A Syracuse
NEW YORK — In a surprising move, the New York Mets have cut veteran reliever Jake Diekman and promoted fellow left-hander Matt Gage from Triple-A Syracuse. Diekman was 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA and four saves in a team-high 43 appearances after signing a $4 million, one-year contract with the Mets in February. He earned a huge save at Yankee Stadium last Tuesday, striking out red-hot slugger Aaron Judge with a runner aboard in the ninth inning of a 3-2 victory. But the 37-year-old Diekman struggled in two outings against Atlanta over the weekend and was designated for assignment before Monday night's series opener versus Minnesota. Diekman has a 3.91 ERA and 19 saves over 13 major league seasons with nine teams.

Once an Enemy, Upstate NY Native Now ‘Excited’ to Be with Mets After Trade
The relationship between Jesse Winker and fans of the New York Mets has been a tumultuous one, to say the least. It all started five years ago, when Winker was a member of the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds beat the Mets at Citi Field that season, and at numerous points, Winker made waving gestures that enraged New York fans.
Sal Licata strikes again as Braves rout Mets
The Braves began their weekend series against the Mets with two losses, both of which were demoralizing for completely different reasons. On Thursday, Chris Sale tossed an absolute gem that Atlanta fumbled away with elementary base running and defensive mistakes. On Friday, New York rocked Charlie Morton, and the Braves didn’t even put up a fight. Thankfully, the Braves had an ace up their sleeve — Sal Licata. The New York pundit declared the NL Wild Card race over following the Mets 2-0 start to the series, which was followed by the Braves outscoring their rivals 13-2 over the next two games. The...

After a two-game sweep of the New York Yankees, the New York Mets returned to Citi Field to welcome the Atlanta Braves to town for a four-game set. Nine innings wasn’t enough to settle things in game one, but Jeff McNeil became the hero as his walk-off single gave the Mets a 3-2 victory.
