Mets' Sean Manaea: Fans 11 in seventh win
Manaea (7-4) picked up the win Tuesday, scattering two hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Twins. He struck out 11. The veteran southpaw tied his season high in innings while setting a new season high in Ks, as Manaea generated an eye-popping 23 swinging strikes among his 96 pitches. He's been outstanding over the last six weeks, giving up three earned runs or less in eight of his last nine starts while posting a 2.58 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 52:21 K:BB through 52.1 innings over that stretch, and Manaea's impressive run likely contributed to the Mets' decision not to make a more significant rotation addition than Paul Blackburn at the trade deadline. Manaea is scheduled to make his next start on the road early next week in St. Louis.
Mets' Paul Blackburn: Set for Mets debut Friday
Blackburn will make his Mets debut Friday against the Angels, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Blackburn has yet to be officially added to the roster after being acquired via trade from the Athletics on Tuesday, but that will happen this weekend. The right-hander has been limited to just nine starts this season because of a foot injury but has been decent when healthy, holding a 4.41 ERA and 38:14 K:BB over 51 innings. With Blackburn aboard, the Mets will send Tylor Megill to the bullpen.
Adrian Houser: Heads to open market
The Mets released Houser on Wednesday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Houser will head to free agency after he went unclaimed off waivers upon being designated for assignment last weekend. The right-hander opened the season in the Mets' rotation, posting an 8.55 ERA over seven starts before he was permanently moved him to the bullpen in late May. Houser turned in a 3.28 ERA over 35.2 innings as a reliever, but he didn't notice much of a bump in his strikeout rate (16.8 percent) and had mostly underwhelming underlying statistics. He'll look to catch on elsewhere as organizational starting pitching depth and may have to settle for a minor-league contract.
