NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The Mets kicked off their 2024 season Friday afternoon, taking on the Milwaukee Brewers. It's a fresh start for the team, with a new manager in Carlos Mendoza and a new president of baseball operations in David Stearns, as well as a new focus on developing young players—and All-Star closer Edwin Díaz is back after he missed last season following a knee surgery.

The Brewers again scored during the top of the seventh, and at the bottom of the eighth, remained in the lead with a score of 3-1.

2:20 p.m. -- Marte scores the Amazin's first home run of the season
Startling Marte hit a line-drive to left center that went over the top of the wall. The ball went above the orange line, hit the railing right above and came back onto the field, signaling the Mets' first home run of the season and the first point in the game.

9:30 a.m. – What to know going into today's home opener
Violinists Chelsea Starbuck Smith and Mary Jo Stilp of the hit Broadway musical "& Juliet" will perform the National Anthem. The NYPD ceremonial unit will present the colors. In the middle of the seventh inning, FDNY Fire Fighter Regina Wilson will sing "God Bless America."
This season, the Mets will wear a tribute uniform patch all season long to honor Mets Hall of Famer Buddy Harrelson, who died at 79 on Jan. 10. His six grandchildren will take part in the ceremonial first pitch, and many of his family members will be at Citi Field for the home opener.
Citi Field's newest dance team, the Queens Crew Presented by Cadillac, will kick off their inaugural season with live performances throughout the Opening Day festivities at the ballpark.
9 a.m. – Mets to honor slain NYPD officer
The Mets will honor NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, who was fatally shot earlier this week during a traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens.

Photo credit NYPD As the wake for Diller continues in Massapequa Park on Friday—following visits by former President Donald Trump and Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday—the Mets will have a sign at Citi Field with a photo of the fallen officer and the words, "In Memoriam: Jonathan Diller 1992-2024."
Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed flags to fly at half-staff statewide on Saturday, when Diller's funeral will take place.
