Jerry: J.D. Martinez giving Mets more DH production than they've ever had

J.D. Martinez picked up another hit on Monday night, and as his bat has heated up, so has the Mets lineup, resulting in six straight wins and 10 in their last 12.

Jerry, filling in for Boomer and Gio on Tuesday, says the veteran Martinez is the best DH the Mets have had in their short history with a designated hitter.

“A lot of what they have done over the last couple of weeks, he has been the catalyst. That’s why you went out and got him,” Jerry said. “That’s why people were screaming in the offseason… ‘Go get a DH to at least fill that role.’

“This was why. All of a sudden, you’re getting production out of the DH spot that I don’t think the Mets have ever had since the DH came to the National League.”

Martinez holds an .872 OPS on the season and looks to still have plenty of pop left in his bat. It is a much-needed power presence in the middle of the order, and Jerry says it is making all the difference after the offense was struggling for much of the season.

“They’ve had two stretches this season where they’ve been the hottest team in all of baseball,” Jerry said. “And they’re on it again right now.”
