Steve Cohen’s message to Mets amid ‘electric’ run: ‘Let’s keep this going!’

What a difference a month or so has made for the surging Mets, and for the mindset of owner Steve Cohen.
In late May, with the Mets in the throes of what would turn out to be a 24-35 start, Cohen posted on X about the “mind-boggling” and “disheartening” stretch that threatened to torpedo the team’s season before it was too months old.
Contrast that messaging with Cohen’s tweet Saturday after the Mets won 16 of their previous 20 games before facing the Astros at Citi Field to move over the .500 mark at 40-39 following Friday’s 7-2 win over Houston .
“There is something special happening at Citifield,” Cohen wrote on his social-media account. “The players have come together and are playing for each other. The atmosphere is electric. Let’s keep this going!”

Indeed, the Mets suddenly have advanced into the thick of the wild-card race under first-year manager Carlos Mendoza, beginning the day one game removed from a playoff position in the National League with the season’s 81-game midpoint slated for Sunday’s series finale.
Team president David Stearns had said Friday that he can envision adding pieces at the July 30 trade deadline rather than what previously looked like it would be a second straight summer of selling.

“We’ve given ourselves an opportunity, and we need to continue to run with it,” Stearns said before the series opener. “I think Steve has shown repeatedly that he is committed to investing the resources in the team that we need to compete. And certainly I think we’ll continue to do so.”
The Mets already have the highest payroll in terms of the competitive balance luxury tax at $346.6 million, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, including the hefty portions they are paying for former players such as Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander and others.
Cohen fully expected the team to be competitive this season, but the Mets initially could not overcome an injury to holdover starting pitcher Kodai Senga and poor starts by several lineup regulars and returning closer Edwin Diaz.

On May 24, between back-to-back ugly losses against the Giants, Cohen took to social media to express his displeasure.
“What a stretch, mind boggling,” Cohen tweeted. “I know how disheartening this is for our fans. [Thank you] for caring so much.”

Over the previous 30 days through Friday, the Mets owned the best batting average (.294), on-base percentage (.367), slugging percentage (.526) and OPS (.893) in baseball, while trailing only the Orioles in home runs and runs scored.
Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso all have heated up offensively, while veteran designated hitter J.D. Martinez — who signed late in spring training — also has provided some thump in the middle of the batting order.,
Catcher Francisco Alvarez also has been hot since returning June 11 from the injured list, and Mark Vientos has seized the everyday job at third base with a .906 OPS in 36 appearances entering Saturday’s game.

Former Yankees ace Luis Severino has had a strong bounce-back season — and could be the team’s All-Star representative — with a 3.29 ERA in 90 1/3 innings over 15 starts
If all goes well in a bullpen session Sunday, Senga also is slated to begin a minor-league rehab assignment later this week, which could have him rejoining the rotation soon after the All-Star break.
