Mets star Brandon Nimmo suffers terrifying head injury after fainting in bathroom

New York Mets star Brandon Nimmo suffered a scary moment on Monday, "blacking out" in a hotel bathroom and waking up with a nasty cut on his forehead with no recollection of what happened.

The 31-year-old was in action for the Mets on Sunday, hitting a home run and racking up three RBIs in a 10-5 defeat to the Houston Astros at Citi Field. After the game, the Mets headed to Washington D.C. for a three-game road stand against the Nationals.

The nine-year MLB veteran woke up feeling unwell and soon was left confused as he regained consciousness on the bathroom floor with blood pouring from his head. He was swiftly tended to by team trainers and underwent numerous tests which came back negative, allaying fears of a serious underlying issue.

Nimmo was also cleared of having a concussion, he will miss at least one game after sitting out Monday's 9-7 win offer the Nationals.

"I went to bed last night and woke up at about 5.15 a.m. and my stomach wasn't feeling that great," Nimmo told reporters before Monday's game. "I decided to go to the bathroom and when I got there, I cramped, presumably from the physical exertion of yesterday.

"When I cramped, I got up really fast and I went to go get a drink of water. I came back to the toilet and I don't remember going from the toilet. All I remember is I woke up, I was on the floor of the bathroom and I was confused.

"I was like 'Why am I here?' and when I pushed up I had blood running off my face from where I hit my head. I'm not sure where, I'm not sure how. I've never had anything like this happen where I blacked out and I literally cannot tell you what happened. I don't know."

Nimmo confirmed he had no alcohol in his system at the time of the incident and he was relieved to receive a clean bill of health from doctors after a trip to hospital.

"I didn't drink at all," he explained. "I'm not really sure why this happened but what we were able to do is go check all the boxes and the trainers came over and we started getting everything in motion. We went to the E.R, got a C.T. scan, an E.K.G., all the tests that we could think of in order to find out what this could be. The conclusion at the end of it is that what most likely happened is something similar to a Valsalva movement.

"When I sleep, I sleep at like 38 beats per minute and when I got the cramp, it spiked my blood pressure real quick. I got tingling in my hands, I got really hot and that's the last I can remember.

"We're really glad that's all. All the tests have come back negative and that's really positive for us. It's just something, from what I was told by the doctors, that could happen one time in your life and you never have to deal with it again. Sometimes a perfect storm happens."

Nimmo could be back in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals. The left-fielder is batting .247/.367/.448 this season with 13 home runs, five stolen bases and a team-high 53 runs scored.
