Mets’ Pete Alonso returning to Home Run Derby for latest shot at third title

Pete Alonso will be returning to the Home Run Derby after all.
Hours after being announced as the Mets’ lone representative for the All-Star Game next week, Alonso revealed in an Instagram post that he’ll also be participating in the Home Run Derby — which he has already won twice — on July 15 at Globe Life Field.
Alonso’s post on Instagram contained a television surrounded by a flame as clips from past appearances and wins at the Derby — as well as other Mets highlights — played on the screen.
He won back-to-back titles at the event in 2019 and 2021, with the Derby canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, and he was eliminated by the Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez for a second consecutive year during the 2023 Home Run Derby in Seattle.
During that event, Alonso didn’t make it past the first round, as Rodriguez set a single-round record with 41 homers — 20 more than Alonso — to knock out the Mets’ first baseman.
“Unfortunately ran into a buzz saw,” Alonso told reporters last year following his exit. “He had a ridiculously historic round. That was incredible to watch. Good for him and good for Seattle. It’s awesome.”

Alonso has collected 18 homers for the Mets this season, along with 48 RBI and a .789 OPS, and he has launched 210 of them across his six-year career in the majors.
But when asked about participating in the Derby late last week, Puma told The Post’s Mike Puma that his decision would depend — similar to his one from 2023 — on whether he made the National League roster.
“If I’m selected to the All-Star team, then I am definitely open to doing it,” Alonso said at the time. “It’s a super fun event.”
Just days later, after the Mets defeated the Pirates and Alonso called himself “truly blessed” to get named an All-Star for a fourth time, his return was finalized.
While the bracket hasn’t been announced, the Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson and the Phillies’ Alec Bohm are the other two contestants who’ve committed.
Yankees stars Aaron Judge and Juan Soto have already revealed that they won’t participate.
