Luis Severino rooting for Yankees to win it all — but only if Mets aren’t going to

MIAMI — Luis Severino expects to hear several boos returning to Yankee Stadium on Tuesday wearing an opposing jersey for the first time.
It’s understandable to the Mets ace, but he also noted Monday that he hasn’t completely changed his stripes just because he now plays home games in Queens instead of The Bronx.
Before the Mets played their 6-4 win in the series finale against the Marlins, the right-hander was asked if he still wants the Yankees to succeed.

Severino pitched for the Yankees from 2015-23 before last offseason receiving a one-year contract worth $13 million from the Mets.
“For me, if we’re not winning the World Series I would rather the Yankees win the World Series,” Severino told The Post. “I have made a lot of friends there, not just players, but coaches and staff that I stay in touch with, so if we don’t win it I would want the Yankees to.”
“A hundred percent,” Severino said. “And I would be rooting for the Yankees. … I will not wear a Yankees hat, but I will be rooting inside for my guys.”
Before the teams played last month at Citi Field, manager Carlos Mendoza realigned his rotation to start lefties David Peterson and Sean Manaea against the Yankees.

And as much as Severino lobbied for a start this week in his old stomping ground, Mendoza has Jose Quintana (another lefty) and Manaea scheduled for the next two games.
Teased that he was afraid to pitch against his former teammates, Severino said he responded by saying he didn’t have fear because the Yankees only have “two good hitters.”
“There were a lot of people, but I know that the guys from the team know that I was joking,” Severino said. “A lot of fans went crazy about it. The guys that I really care about are the team and they knew I was joking around. Sometimes somebody is going to be pissed but in the end I wasn’t trying to hurt anybody.”
Harrison Bader, a New Yorker who grew up rooting for the Yankees, will also be returning to Yankee Stadium for the first time wearing a Mets uniform. Bader played for the Yankees in 2022-23.
But unlike Severino, the veteran outfielder said he won’t be rooting for the Yankees to win the World Series if it can’t be the Mets.

“If it’s not me or the team I am playing for I don’t want anybody to win,” Bader said. “I want the Mets to win the World Series. That’s it. If we can’t win it then I am disinterested.”
Bader was clean-shaven on Monday, discarding his beard because he says his mother got on his case about it.
But the fact that shave happened before a series against the Yankees (who don’t permit beards and long hair for their players) wasn’t lost on one of his teammates.
“I actually thought it was funny, because I didn’t even think about it,” Bader said. “My mom will be happy — as soon as I [shaved] I sent her a photo.”
Severino was asked if he had any advice for Quintana facing the Yankees lineup.
“[Aaron] Judge is a guy you have to make him chase and if he doesn’t chase, ‘go to first base’ and then face the other guys,” Severino said. “You can’t let someone like him or [Juan] Soto beat you because they are the two main guys. So I would rather walk those guys and face everybody else than try to be a hero.”
