NEW YORK — Jose Butto joked that he owes Tyrone Taylor lunch after the Mets outfielder made one of the prettiest catches of the team's season.
With the Mets leading 11-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Ryan Jeffers led off the frame with a deep fly ball to right-center field. Taylor, who was a defensive replacement for newcomer Jesse Winker, went sprinting back and leapt to bring back a potential home run ball.
"I think anticipating the ball being hit to you, first and foremost," Taylor said of what goes into making that play, "and then just getting a good initial read and hoping that the ball stays in the ballpark."
After the catch, Butto tipped his cap to his right fielder.
Jeffers' long drive, which checked in at 101.2 mph at 31 degrees, would have been a home run in five of Major League Baseball's 30 parks, according to Statcast. It had a 54 percent chance of being a home run, but Taylor ensured that did not happen.
It was the first batter that Butto faced in the game. He finished with a three-inning save, allowing a home run to Jeffers in the ninth inning and finished with one earned runs allowed on four hits and one walk while striking out two.
After robbing a home run in the seventh, Taylor wasn't done, tracking down a line drive deep in the right-center field gap off the bat of Brooks Lee in the top of the ninth inning.
"Pretty good, pretty impressive. He's a ball player," Carlos Mendoza said. "Anywhere you put him, whether it's in center, in right, actually he robbed that homer and then he goes in the gap and makes another play that he made it look really easy. Off the bat, I thought it was going to be a double and he got there with ease."
