The New York Mets Prepare for their Series at Coors Field

The Mets had to leave the west coast for their game yesterday. The Mets had the very rare task of leaving the west coast for a day then getting back on a plane to play again on the west coast the next day.

New York is not complaining about the tough schedule. Hopefully, the victory against St. Louis got the Mets going and they can take the momentum from that victory into a winnable Rockies series.

The Mets played the Rockies at home in their last series before the All Star break. They won the first two but dropped the final game before the break.

Only one of the six starters expected to start a game in this series for the Mets and Rockies also started in the previous series.

Ryan Feltner pitched game two of the last series. He is lined up to do the same in this series. In the earlier series, Feltner gave up four runs and was not able to get out of the third inning.

The balls were flying in that series. The two teams combined for at least 10 runs in all three games. Most of the runs came from home runs. Expect some real offense in this series. The Coors Field elevation could lead to fireworks.

Luis Severino gets the ball in game one today. The ex-Yankee is coming off his worst start of the year. Severino had nothing in his outing against the Twins. It seemed like every pitch Severino threw was hit.

Severino is key to the Mets’ success down the stretch. He has been dominant at times, but he has also been hit really hard. It will be interesting to see which way he trends as his innings total continues to go up.

Paul Blackburn will start game two. Coors Field seems to be favorable for Blackburn’s way of pitching. Blackburn is a ground ball pitcher. That helps him at Coors Field, where balls fly out of the park.

David Peterson is pitching game three of the series. Peterson had a nice bounce back start in his last go around. He only walked one in that outing. The left hander becomes a much more dangerous pitcher if he keeps control of the strike zone.

Brandon Nimmo has been in a real slump since the break but he is in a good place to break out of it. Nimmo always succeeds in Colorado. That success is not random and the reason for it goes way beyond the hitter friendly nature of the stadium.

Nimmo hails from Wyoming. Because his friends and family live in a remote location, he rarely gets to play in front of them. However, when Nimmo goes to Colorado, he gets a full entourage. The long time Met clearly relishes playing in front of and seeing his family. Expect him to break out of his slump in a big way.

The Mets can get rolling again tonight in Colorado.
