Connecticut housing official named new CEO of Alexandria’s housing authority
A veteran of housing development in Connecticut will take the reins of the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA) next month as the new CEO. Erik Johnson comes to Alexandria from Hamden, Connecticut, where he served as Director of Economic and Community Development. Before that, Johnson oversaw the housing department for the City of Hartford.

Aston unhoused shelter to open by early October, District officials say
District officials last week said an unhoused shelter near campus will begin admitting residents by early October, wrapping up nine months of delays opening the facility. The Aston, a former GW residence hall on New Hampshire Avenue, will open its doors to unhoused residents between mid-September and early October, and start accepting program referrals from service providers on Sept. 9, D.C. Department of Human Services Deputy Administrator Anthony Newman announced at a Community Advisory Team meeting on Aug. 12. The announcement comes after Newman predicted in July that the shelter would open by late August, and marks the fourth time officials have moved the opening date since slating its opening for November 2023.

Giant Food revises previous bag policy
WASHINGTON — An amendment is being made to the Giant Food bag policy issued three months ago in D.C. In May, Giant Food passed a bag policy to help reduce the amount of thefts they were experiencing. The policy states that customers cannot bring suitcases, duffel bags, or bags larger than 14” x 14” x 6” while shopping in these stores, which are all locations in D.C. and some additional ones throughout the region.

Maryland State Police say Virginia State Police supervisors authorized Amber Alert pursuit that ended in MD crash
VIRGINIA BEACH. VA (AP/CVILLE RIGHT NOW) —Maryland State Police have clarified because Virginia State Police were pursuing a vehicle in Virginia with a felony abduction suspect, Virginia State Police supervision authorized the pursuit continue across the Maryland state line. Maryland State Police Maj. Adam Stachurski said they are the lead investigative agency in the crash that ended the pursuit on I-495 at Branch Avenue in Prince George’s County, MD. He said they received a call for assistance from Virginia State Police and arrived about two minutes after the crash. Stuchurski said while one of the children was transported via helicopter to Children’s Medical Center in DC where he died a short time later, 36-year old Dana Plummer, who allegedly kidnapped the children from a Virginia Beach home, and the two other children were in stable condition at area hospitals.
