RAHWAY, NJ — Heading out to take care of a few things the other day, TAPinto Rahway decided to pay a visit to the Rahway High School (RHS) girls varsity basketball team. Though the season doesn't take place until the winter, Head Coach Jorge Gutierrez told us that the team would be in the high school gymnasium running through one of its summer practices. So we thought it was a good time, about midway into the summer, to stop by, snap a few photos, and see what the girls were up to.
The varsity team is expecting five returning seniors for the upcoming season, along with a number of younger players who, Gutierrez said, "brought a lot of success for us last season [so] we plan to lean on them as well."
Speaking about the philosophy behind practices and preparation over the summer, Gutierrez shared that he seeks to instill in the team a sentiment of "winning games in the off-season."
What he means by this, he went on to say, is the idea of "putting in the time and work to sharpen our skills and build a culture in the off-season that will easily translate to getting wins when the winter comes around.
"The girls have shown commitment and dedication in the off-season, and they understand the process of becoming an accomplished team. We have fallen just short of winning the division the last few seasons, and we understand what it takes to do so. Bringing a division title to Rahway High School is a goal we’re chasing this year," he said.
Gutierrez shared that he felt the team had taken some very productive steps in the right direction the last few seasons.
The team has enjoyed double-digit wins the past two years, along with qualifying for the state playoffs in four of the last five seasons.
"I’m excited for a new group of freshmen to join us. It’s important to keep building the program from the ground up," he said. "Rahway has a lot of young female athletes who are doing great things, and we look forward to seeing them put on a Rahway uniform in the near future."
Gutierrez also mentioned that he plans to hold some open workouts and practices around mid-August and to invite Rahway female athletes of any age. He said it would be an opportunity to stop by the high school, work out with the varsity team, and continue to build some community and camaraderie.
So stay tuned for TAPinto Rahway's continuing coverage of the girls basketball team and all our athletes and teams!
