RAHWAY, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A New Jersey detective was shot three times and wounded as police served a search warrant in Union County on Wednesday night.

Perth Amboy and Rahway police officers went to a home at 1076 Broad St. in Rahway to serve the warrant around 8:30 p.m., but two men fled from them, and one fired off shots, according to Rahway Mayor Raymond Giacobbe.

A detective from Perth Amboy was struck three times in the leg, the New Jersey State PBA said .

Police apparently returned fire, as the suspect who opened fire was also shot in the leg, according to Giacobbe.

Both suspects were ultimately taken into custody. They haven’t been identified, and it’s unclear what type of investigation prompted the warrant.

The detective was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where his condition was upgraded to stable on Thursday.

Gov. Phil Murphy wrote on X that he’d been briefed on the shooting.

“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe,” Murphy wrote. “Please keep this officer and his family in your prayers.”

State Attorney General Matthew Platkin said in a statement that his office was “grateful to the many law enforcement officers who responded and rendered aid immediately after the shooting.”

“Our heartfelt thoughts are with the officer who was injured, the responding officers, their loved ones, and all families impacted by gun violence,” Platkin said.

Police tape blocked off a stretch of Broad Street on Thursday as an investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office continued.
