Update: Perth Amboy Detective Injured in Officer-Involved Shooting in Rahway

RAHWAY, NJ — On July 24, 2024, at approximately 8:42 p.m., a Perth Amboy Police detective was injured during an officer-involved shooting in the City of Rahway, Union County Prosecutor William Daniel and Rahway Police Director Nicholas Breiner announced today.
Perth Amboy detectives were in Rahway attempting to execute an arrest warrant for 20-year-old Rahway resident Angel Santiago, who is a suspect in an aggravated assault incident that occurred in Perth Amboy on July 23.
As police approached the area, there was an exchange of gunfire between Perth Amboy detectives and Santiago, resulting in a Perth Amboy detective sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the leg and Santiago sustaining a single gunshot wound to the lower leg. The detective was transported to RWJ/Barnabas Hospital in New Brunswick with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
Santiago was also transported to a local area hospital for treatment, where he is currently in the custody of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office for the outstanding warrant from July 23rd.
A handgun has been recovered from the scene.
