Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe provided updates today on an officer involved shooting that occurred Tuesday in Raleigh, in which an evicted man barricaded himself inside of his apartment and refused to vacate the area.

The shooting occurred just before 11:00 a.m. at an apartment complex on Water Oaks Drive in Raleigh. Deputies arrived at the residence to serve an eviction order, but the man refused to leave his apartment.

The standoff lasted until about 5:30 p.m., when deputies entered the apartment by force. While attempting to remove the man from the premise, one officer discharged his gun, injuring the man.

“Once a court order’s been issued, then we have the duty to serve that order,” Rowe said. “Yesterday was an incident where we served the order and the individual refused to leave, and from that point it became a criminal matter.”

Rowe cited ongoing investigations by both the State Bureau of Investigation and by his own office as reason to keep his answers short and the media session brief.

The man was taken to WakeMed with what the Sheriff’s Office said were serious injuries.

The deputy who shot him is on administrative leave, which is consistent with department protocol in instances of shootings.
