Apple confirmed a pause of development for the Research Triangle Park campus to the Triangle Business Journal and is trying to extend the project by four years. The tech company announced plans for the $1 billion investment into NC in 2021 which would bring 3,000 jobs to the Triangle.

    What this means

Construction has not begun and no public updates for an intended start date have been announced. In a statement the Triangle Business Journal Gov. Roy Cooper said Apple, “emphasized their commitment to build this transformative campus here in North Carolina.”

In a statement, Apple said in part "...we’re deeply committed to growing our teams here...and we’re looking forward to developing our new campus in the coming years.”

Though Apple has operated in NC for two decades, the RTP project’s delay will impact its eligibility for hundreds of millions of dollars in state incentives conditioned on the company’s milestones toward hiring and investment goals.

    Direct impacts

Since April of 2021, Apple has employed nearly 600 people in Raleigh, but whether the company will be able to provide the quantity of jobs that would have long-term economic benefits is currently uncertain.

The delay of the campus may affect the $100 million committed to support schools and education incentives in the Triangle along with an additional $110 million pledged for infrastructure across 80 NC counties.
