Former San Jose Sharks defenseman Joakim Ryan signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes after spending the last three seasons playing in Sweden.

Ryan last played in the NHL with the Hurricanes (four games) in 2020-21. He also played four games in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves.

The former Sharks seventh-round pick in 2012 has played the last three seasons with Malmö Redhawks in the SHL. During the 23-24 season, Ryan scored seven goals and 11 assists. In his first season with the Redhawks, he scored nine goals and 22 assists.

Ryan played for San Jose from 2017 to 2019. In 106 career games for the Sharks, Ryan tallied three goals and nine assists. He's also played for the Los Angeles Kings during the 19-20 season.

He's played 23 career postseason games, all for the Sharks, and has one assist in those games.

The 31-year-old returns to North America to give the Hurricanes some organizational depth at defense after losing Brett Pesce to the New Jersey Devils in free agency this summer.

Ryan could spend time in the AHL as he is on a two-way deal with Carolina, but the veteran could always be called up if the Hurricanes are dealing with injuries.
