COLOMA -- In a tiny town where the California gold rush began, Black families are seeking restitution for land that was taken from their ancestors to make way for a state park now frequented by fourth graders learning about the state's history.Their efforts in Coloma, a town of around 300 people that's located about 36 miles northeast of Sacramento, are one of the latest examples of Black Americans urging the government to atone for practices that have kept them from thriving long after chattel slavery was abolished.Debates over reparations for African Americans often come back to land. That was at...
Morning Report: Mega-Shelter Monday
The City Council is set to vote today on whether to move forward with a proposed 1,000 bed shelter campus pushed by Mayor Todd Gloria. The 30-year lease agreement for the Middletown warehouse the city wants to turn into the city’s largest long-term homeless campus – and the concept itself – have spawned major questions: What’s the value of the building? Can the city count on the site and its potential landlord? Should the city open a big shelter and pull from housing funds to pay for it? Is it sustainable?

One year after pushing through a controversial public camping ban, San Diego officials are preparing to tout efforts to expand shelter capacity by 40% in the face of a worsening homelessness crisis. But more than half of the city’s new shelter options don’t actually qualify as shelter under federal guidelines...

With Accessible CPR Classes, Everyone Can Be a Link in the Chain of Survival

This is especially true for the deaf and hearing impaired, blind and visually impaired, seniors (who may have compounding needs) and those with physical and cognitive disabilities. Emergency responders from Falck San Diego are addressing the...

Lucky Israeli-Flagged Desserts at Sycuan Slots Tournament
SAN DIEGO – This past weekend I stayed at Sycuan Casino Resort on a reservation owned by one branch of the Kumeyaay people. My favorite slot machine is in the non-smoking section. It is named Aztec Temple and is a “penny slot.” I like this machine since I am a graduate of San Diego State University, whose team nicknames are the Aztecs, and I always get more than I put in (fingers crossed I don’t jinx myself for next time).
Two-Night ‘Henry 6’: An Enjoyable Time- and Gender-Bending Spectacle
SAN DIEGO — Play. Production. Spectacle. Event. None of these words adequately describe The Old Globe’s current show Henry 6 for it is all of these things. A first for me, the play is presented in two-parts, over two-days. Each play is about 2.5 hours including intermission. But...
