A wildfire that started Wednesday afternoon in a park near Chico, California, north of Sacramento, exploded in size overnight and continued to spread through the day Thursday — and it may have been deliberately set. Suspicious Couple Near Marie Fire Evacuation Road Closure Arrested
Mokelumne Hill, CA – A couple was arrested after trying to drive past road closure signs for the Marie Fire burning near Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County. The incident occurred last night (7/23) around 11:20 p.m. when sheriff’s deputies assigned to security within the evacuation area stopped a vehicle attempting to enter the restricted disaster zone through a closed roadway at Highway 26 and Jesus Maria Road. Inside the car, which can be viewed in the image box photos, were 50-year-old Tony Johnston of Valley Springs and 59-year-old Crystal Boster of Mokelumne Hill.

Officials charge man for starting California wildfire that has burned more than 71,000 acres
A Northern California wildland fire that exploded overnight into the state's largest blaze this wildfire season, destroying structures and prompting thousands of evacuations, was allegedly started by a man who pushed a burning car into a gully, authorities said Thursday. The 48-year-old arson suspect charged with starting the Park Fire in Butte County near the city of Chico was arrested Thursday morning and jailed without bail, said Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey. The suspect's name was not immediately released. The suspect was allegedly spotted just before 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, pushing a car that was on fire down a gully called "Alligator Hole" in Bidwell Park, near Chico, Ramsey said. "The car went down an embankment approximately 60 feet and burned completely, spreading flames that caused the Park Fire," Ramsey said in a statement.
