Man convicted in 2018 fatal shooting of Sacramento County deputy

(FOX40.COM) — A man was convicted Tuesday for a 2018 fatal shooting of a Sacramento County deputy , according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said Anton Lemon Paris was found guilty by a jury for several charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder of another officer, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Deputy Mark Stasyuk, 27, was shot and killed in the line of duty after responding to an argument at a tire shop in Rancho Cordova on Sept. 17, 2018. Stasyuk served with the sheriff’s office for four and a half years prior to his death.

“Deputy Stasyuk’s dedication to serving our community will never be forgotten, and today’s verdict brings a measure of justice to his memory and solace to his loved one, our agencies and our entire community,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The DA’s office said Paris and his ex-girlfriend were at Pep Boys on Folsom Boulevard where he became “agitated” and was pacing “around the store in an aggressive manner” while making “threatening remarks.”

“Several employees observed Paris knocking things off shelves and saying he was going to kill everyone in the store,” the DA’s office said in a press release.

Prosecutors said Stasyuk and Sacramento County Deputy Julie Robertson responded to a call from an employee.

Stasyuk walked into the business first and asked Paris if he and his partner could to talk him. Prosecutors said surveillance footage showed the two deputies did not have their guns out or their hands on their weapons at that time.

Paris ran towards the front doors of the business and fired a semi-automatic weapon toward an employee in the upper back and later shot at Stasyuk one time each in the torso and head, the DA said. Stasyuk was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Paris and Robertson, who were injured, exchanged gunfire until the former left the area and jogged down Folsom Boulevard. Paris encountered law enforcement again firing shots at deputies, who returned fire before taking him into custody.

Robertson and the Pep Boys employee survived their injuries, officials said.

The Rancho Cordova community honored Stasyuk three years after the shooting by unveiling a memorial in his honor.
