RANDOLPH, NJ- On Saturday, August 3, the Stefan Strong Foundation will host an afternoon of fun for their annual fundraising event at the Fort Nonsense Brewery in Randolph.
The Stefan Strong Foundation is a Randolph-based charity focused on raising funds to assist in the fight against childhood cancers. The foundation was formed after a Randolph High School senior - Stefan Tamminga, who played four years of ice hockey for the Rams, was diagnosed with cancer during his senior year of high school.
“Our journey began in September 2013 when Stefan was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma at just 18 years old,” said Dana Tamminga, Stefan’s mom. "His amazing strength and determination to fight this disease rapidly had the Randolph community showering him with love, support, and most importantly hope. It was this incredible outpouring that brought this Foundation together.”
After Stefan received a “cancer free” diagnosis, the foundation was faced with the question of “What now”? After seeing what love and compassion did to help the Tamminga family, they wanted to share that with others fighting the same battle.
“Our mission is to create a space where children and their families fighting this same battle can lose themselves for a little while in a beautiful mural,” said Dana Tamminga. Whether they are entertained by finding hidden objects or just transported away from the machines and the hospital setting of which they are all too familiar.”
The foundation has recently donated two hand painted “I Spy” murals to The Valerie Center located at Morristown Medical Center in NJ. They are now working with the K. Hovanian Hospital Outpatient facility in Old Bridge where at least one and possibly two murals will be painted.
“Hearing about the amazing impact that the first two murals have had on the children has opened the lines of communication with multiple facilities,” said Tamminga. “This is happening – our mission is taking flight, and we couldn’t be more proud or more grateful for the continued support.”
Depending on the event, the organization has successfully raised anywhere from $2,500 - $10,000 in years past. Each mural painting ranges from $5000 - $7500 each.
This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024 - at the Fort Nonsense Brewery located at 200 Franklin Road in Randolph. The event will run from 12pm to 4 pm, and will be a fun-filled and active afternoon of great brews, live music, food, and lawn games. All are welcome to attend and help support the cause.
