RAYNE, La. ( KLFY ) — A mobile home outside Rayne was the target of a hail of gunfire on Monday, and the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office is seeking the community’s help in finding the suspects.

Police said an unknown number of people approached a residence on Pinto Lane east of Rayne at approximately 3:30 a.m. Monday and pumped 45 rounds into the home. Various weapons were used including rifles and handguns.

Police said no one was home at the time of this incident. Acadia Parish Sheriff KP Gibson said he believes that this was a retaliation for unknown reasons.

“It’s concerning because, I mean, you had to shoot that many rounds at somebody. Obviously, you had a very strong intent to harm someone,” Gibson said. “We’re trying to not only find out who they are, but what ties into this to find out what’s the reasoning for it so we can stop it first of all. Get those in custody, hopefully from that aspect because if they did, then they’ll do it again.”

He added the shooting put other people’s lives in the area in danger.

“You don’t want to see violence against anybody they have an issue with but you don’t know if there are children, elderly people, or other family members that are not involved in this issue that can be injured as well,” Gibson said. “As well as, if you pick the wrong house or you shoot through and it’s a neighbor’s house, it’s just a lot of things that could really go bad but period, it shouldn’t be done.”

Gibson said they put information out on CrimeStoppers to get help with information.

“We’re hoping someone may know something about it, maybe have seen a vehicle leaving or people fleeing after this incident,” he said. “Know, it was very early in the morning, but any lead we can get we’re definitely looking for it because if this happened now, it’ll happen again. If they’re really trying to kill somebody. The goal is obviously, if you’re shooting that many times you’re trying to end somebody’s life.”

He said charges depend on the circumstances as it could have been a drive-by shooting, assault by a drive-by shooting, or aggravated criminal damage to property. For it to be attempted murder, someone would have to have been in the trailer whose life would have been at risk.

“It really important to stop this before someone’s life or whether the person who is intended or even innocent life is taken because it seems that this is a very aggressive aspect towards someone,” Gibson said. “So we definitely would like any information we can to try and help solve this and resolve this and get this problem off the streets.”

If you have any information regarding this incident, you are urged to call the tips line at 789-TIPS or log on to the APSO’s P3 app to report your tip. All callers will remain anonymous and can receive up to a $2,500 cash reward for information leading to arrests in this case.
