This weekend at the Delaware beaches: Lower temps, Biden and much to do

The heat wave is finally breaking at the Delaware beaches.

Temperatures have been in the 90s for most of the month, but Thursday is expected to see the lower 80s on the thermometer. You might actually be able to stay out of the water long enough to get a full-body tan.

President Biden is back in Rehoboth Beach, staying for an unknown length of time. Police continue to urge parents to keep their teens in check. Read on for all you need to know about weather, events and more at the Delaware beaches this weekend.

    Weather

After a long dry spell, Delaware finally got some rain last week, but the heat came back with a vengeance Monday. After a couple sunny beach days, heavy rain and severe storms were possible Wednesday night.

Thursday is expected to be partly sunny, with a chance of showers in the morning and likely in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be sunnier, with temperatures around 80 degrees (20 degrees lower than earlier this week) and high humidity.

Stay weather aware. Check your favorite weather services and apps often.

    Biden in town

President Biden is in Rehoboth Beach, isolating in his North Shores home after testing positive for COVID.

He was forced to cut his visit short last weekend. On Saturday evening, he attended St. Edmond's Catholic Church on King Charles Avenue Saturday evening, as he usually does when in Rehoboth. While he was there, a bullet grazed former President Donald Trump's ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. After addressing the nation from the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, Biden headed back to the White House.

The president arrived in town late Wednesday night. How long he'll stay is not yet known.

    Teen safety

"Junebugs" is a colloquial term for the young people, often new high school graduates, that come to the Delaware beaches in the summertime, and they are always an issue at this time of year. Too young to go to bars, they sometimes gather in large groups on the streets at night.

Dewey Beach has a curfew for this very reason. In a Facebook post earlier this month, the Dewey Beach Police Department said they'd had an uptick in "nuisance calls" for things such as public urination, underage drinking, drinking in public and loitering. They reminded parents anyone under age 18 is not allowed in public areas between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

There's been at least one more serious teen crime this summer. In June, at 15-year-old raped another 15-year-old on the beach in Rehoboth at night, according to Rehoboth Beach police.

Allowing teens to wander around unsupervised at night is not recommended.

    Things to do

Most Delaware beach towns offer free concerts and other entertainment throughout the summer. Check your town's website for more information. Many bars and restaurants feature entertainment, too.

If the beaches, the boardwalks, the amusement and water parks, the arcades, the shopping and the dining aren't enough, Cape Water Tours and Taxi has gained much popularity in recent years.

The area also offers several top-tier entertainment venues. Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville will host Joe Bonamassa, Leslie Odom Jr. and The Bacon Brothers, among others, this weekend. Dickens Parlour Theatre in Ocean View will offer magicians and comedians. Clear Space Theatre Company in Rehoboth Beach will present "Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages." Visit their websites for tickets.

Rehoboth takes unique approach to trash

There are now pizza box disposal bins on the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach.

Pizza boxes take up a lot of room in a typical trash can, and the trash cans on beach and boardwalk in Rehoboth are often overflowing despite being emptied three times a day. Rehoboth Public Works Director Henry Matlosz brought the pizza box disposal bin to the city after he saw them on a recent trip to Ocean City, New Jersey.

Next time you dine on Rehoboth's favorite culinary delight, look for the bins on the boardwalk at Rehoboth and Baltimore avenues.
