Nearly 23,000 disabled or otherwise impaired adults are under guardianship and conservatorship in Iowa, but only five organizations are available to help them. Guardians of Northeast Iowa is one of those agencies, and last week, the 501c3 nonprofit moved from Calmar to Suite 5 at 110 Washington St., Decorah, so it can better accomplish its mission of protecting and serving the state’s most vulnerable residents.

Mr. Mayor, we, as members of the Volunteer Fire Department, reach out to you today to express our severe disappointment with the latest rendition of a 28E agreement to establish the Agency for Fire and EMS Service that was presented during the Task Force meeting on Wednesday, July 28, 2024.

Small Game Seasons Begin Soon Across Iowa
As summer transitions into fall, hunters across Iowa are gearing up for the start of the small game hunting season. With abundant populations of rabbits, squirrels, and mourning doves, the season promises excitement and ample opportunities for both seasoned hunters and newcomers alike. My vote for aspiring, first-time hunters and kids is definitely squirrels. It's how I got my start hunting. They're abundant, and quite tasty when slow cooked in cream of mushroom soup. YUM!

See What Archeologists in Iowa Unearthed After 13,600 Years
It's nice to see these coming out of the ground like this. Archaeologists in Iowa have made a significant discovery with the unearthing of a well-preserved mastodon skull, dating back approximately 13,600 years. This find, located in the southern part of the state, is Iowa’s first notable mastodon and includes several bones primarily from the skull. The timing of this mastodon’s life aligns with the era when the first humans were inhabiting the region. I wonder if this mastodon knew the Flintstones.

Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois Hikers HAVE TO Avoid Red Or Purple Paint In The Woods
While many who don't live in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin still don't realize how beautiful it is. We are now a couple years into a new acceptance for paint as markers in the state of Illinois. Many of us love to go for hikes in the Fall. While you are enjoying that natural Illinois beauty you might see trees painted with red or purple paint. Do you know what that means? Many don't realize how important the markings are now, and how important it is to keep an eye out for them.
