    Reno, Douglas, Manogue standouts among Champion Chevrolet Athlete of the Week nominees

    These are the May 6-12 nominees for Champion Chevrolet RGJ High School Athlete of the Week, which recognizes top performances among Northern Nevada's high school athletes. Send the names and stats for any outstanding performance by a Northern Nevada high school athlete for consideration for Champion Chevrolet RGJ High School Athletes of the Week list to sports@rgj.com , and cast your vote for the top weekly performance in the poll below. Voting will remain open through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 16.

    Talia Tretton, senior, Douglas: Tretton struck out 15 and did not walk anyone as Douglas beat Spanish Springs 7-0 to win its third straight Class 5A-North Regional softball title on Saturday at Bishop Manogue.

    Tretton has 347 strikeouts this season, which ranks fifth in the nation.

    Brittany Byram, senior, North Valleys: Byrum threw a no-hitter Thursday, May 9 as the Panthers beat Lowry, 5-0. She had 15 strikeouts in the game and was 2-for-3 at the plate. She will play softball at Feather River in the fall.

    Vernita Filmore, junior, Fallon: Fillmore allowed one hit and struck out three in five innings, and was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs, as the Greenwave beat Fernley, 13-0 in five innings for the 3A-North Regional softball championship on May 11. Both Fallon and Fernley advanced to the state tournament, May 16-18.

    Brady Alves, senior, Fallon: Aves was 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Greenwave beat Spring Creek 8-7 in eight innings for the 3A-North Regional baseball title on May 11.

    Colton Ouellette, senior, Reno: Ouellette allowed two hits as the Huskies beat Bishop Manogue, 3-0 in the 5A-North Regional tournament on May 9.

    Blaise Czyz, junior, Bishop Manogue: Czyz was 3-for-4 with a triple and RBI as Manogue beat Reno, 6-3, on May 11 to force the if-necessary game in the 5A-North Regional baseball tournament at Peccole Park.

    Harvey Smerdon, senior, Reno: Smerdon was 2-for-4 with a double and a steal of home as the Huskies beat Bishop Manogue, 3-2 in the Regional baseball championship on May 11.

    Sam Dalinis, senior, Reno : Dalinis is a team captain on the boys swim and dive team. At regionals on May 10-11, he won the 200 free and 500 free and led his 200 free relay team to victory.

    Izzy Porter, senior, McQueen: Porter win the girls 50 free (23.68 seconds) in the 5A-North Regional swimming and diving meet on May 11 at the Carson Aquatic Facility. It was the fourth straight time she has won the event.

    Wade Huntsman, sophomore, Bishop Manogue: Huntsman struck out four and allowed one run as the Miners beat Spanish Springs 10-6 on May 9 in the 5A-North Regional baseball tournament to earn a trip to state.

    Luke Swanson, freshman, Bishop Manogue: Swanson won the boys golf 5A-North Regional tournament on May 7, shooting 74-77--151 over two days at Somersett Golf & Country Club. Manogue won the team title.

    Caroline Macey, freshman, Galena: Macey has had a remarkable rookie season with the Grizzlies, accumulating 33 goals, 13 assists, 24 ground balls and 149 draw controls. On May 6, she was a standout in a 15-13 win over McQueen with three goals, two assists and six draw controls. Macey and the Grizzlies enter the postseason as the No. 1 seed.

    Chloe Mitchell, sophomore, Truckee: Mitchell, a midfielder, has proven impactful on both ends of the field. In the last two games, she has four goals, three assists, two caused turnovers and an interception. For the season, Chloe is the team's second-leading player in goals, draw controls, and total points overall.
