First court date set for Miller family over viral Virginia City incident

The first court date has been set for a family that was involved in an incident in Virginia City that went viral on TikTok over allegations of racism.

A Nov. 14 pretrial conference is scheduled for Gary Miller, wife Janis Miller and daughter Tiffany Miller, the Storey County District Attorney’s Office confirmed with the Reno Gazette Journal.

The hearing will be held at Justice Court in Virginia City.

The three members of the Miller family were arrested on Aug. 7 over an incident that occurred during the Hot August Nights classic car kickoff event at Virginia City.

The incident, which happened on Aug. 2, involved an altercation with a Black man who was seeking support for a voter petition to cap attorney’s fees in Nevada. The canvasser, Ricky Johnson, posted video of the confrontation on TikTok, which earned more than a million views before it was pulled down a few days later.

The incident was widely condemned by Gov. Joe Lombardo , Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, Virginia City and Hot August Nights, who all decried racism in response to the confrontation.

Gary Miller was charged for breach of the peace, which is a gross misdemeanor. Janis Miller was charged with battery while Tiffany Miller was charged for obstructing and delaying a peace officer — both misdemeanors.
