    Rhea' Congressional leaders react to Trump shooting

    Rhea County’s elected officials in Congress said they were thankful that former U.S. President Donald Trump was safe after he sustained an injury during am assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

    “First of all, let’s be thankful that reports are President Trump is safe,” U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais said. “Political violence is never acceptable, and the threats made time and again against President Trump over the years have made today’s event feel like a formality.

    “Let’s all be thankful that this did not turn out to be worse, and Amy and I are grateful that Donald Trump is safe. As the investigation continues, let’s work to make sure this does not happen again.”

    U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn likewise said thankful that Trump was not seriously injured.

    “Tonight, I join the millions of Americans in prayer for President Trump, his family, rally attendees, and our great nation,” Blackburn said. “President Trump is a fierce fighter for the American people, and I’m thankful to hear he is okay. God bless our brave Secret Service and first responders who acted quickly to protect him. This is a horrific day in our nation’s history.”

    A spokesperson for Trump said that he is thankful for the quick response of first responders.

    “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”

    Law enforcement neutralized a shooter, later identified as Thomas Crooks, in Butler, Pa., on Saturday after he opened fire while the former president was giving a speech. According to reports, Trump was injured when one of the rounds grazed his ear, a rally attendee was fatally shot and several more were wounded.
