Cameron Middle School recently received the Wisconsin Association of School Councils Spirit of Excellence Award, which recognizes schools for achieving excellence in leadership, sportsmanship and service to their school and communities.

Schools across Wisconsin competed for the prestigious award in their region, and Cameron Middle School brought home first place for Region I.

Principal Hans Schmidt believes Cameron Middle School’s Student Council won the award because of its leadership.

“Cameron School District is filled with absolutely amazing students and staff,” he said.

Over the past two years fifth-grade teacher Jen LaVallie, and seventh- and eight-grade teachers Chantel Randall and Brittany Olson have “sparked the Student Council and built opportunities for these kids,” he said. “In turn, the kids have stepped up and gone beyond, with every opportunity given.”

According to Schmidt, Student Council usually begins with a Glow Run at a home football game. The council also hosts school dances and positivity days, and even brings in guest speakers.

“This year we had Cory Greenwood and a singer from ‘The Voice’ come to our school,” he said. “It was a fantastic experience. Student Council members also stepped up and hosted a parent shopping day where StuCo. kids babysat their kids. This allowed parents to shop stress-free and their children to get a really fun day with our StuCo. kids. These are just a few of the many great things our kids do here in Cameron with the help of Jen, Chantel and Brittany.”

Student leaders from around the state submitted a detailed portfolio to the WASC highlighting their achievements in multiple areas, including service, sportsmanship and positive culture, leadership in academics, athletics, and fine arts, and development of leadership both in and out of school. This portfolio was judged by a team of leaders from Wisconsin.

Recognition for these awards includes banners for all regional recipients, a trophy for the overall state winners, on-court awards recognition during the March 4 Milwaukee Bucks game, and an awards presentation at the WASC State Leadership Conference in Madison on April 7.
