An 18-year-old Rice Lake man serving eight months in jail for causing the deaths of two teens in an automobile crash has been granted Huber privileges and work release 4½ months into his sentence.

Troy “TJ” Huehn Jr. was convicted of causing the deaths of two teenage passengers and injuring a third as the result of a car crash south of Rice Lake in October 2022.

Fourteen-year-old Evah Garcia of Rice Lake and 15-year-old Winter Brouillard, both students in the Rice Lake Area School District, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Teen Mya Davis suffered significant injuries to her left arm and had to be transported to Marshfield Hospital in Marshfield for immediate treatment. At Huehn’s sentencing hearing in February she said she is permanently disabled in that arm.

Huehn had pleaded guilty on Dec. 21 to two counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle and a single count of reckless driving-causing great bodily harm. Dismissed but read into the record were two knowingly operating without a valid license causing death and another of knowingly operating without a valid license causing injury.

On Feb. 22 Judge James C. Babler ordered Huehn to spend four months in jail on each of the homicide convictions, which will be served consecutively. He noted that Huehn already served four months at a juvenile corrections facility.

Babler also imposed then stayed a 5½-year prison sentence: two years on each homicide and 18 months for the injury conviction. Huehn will be on probation for eight years and if he violates terms, he could be sent to prison.

Huehn, who has been serving his time in Barron County Jail, petitioned the courts on Thursday for Huber and work release, and Babler granted the petition.
