Oakland Coliseum Sale to AASEG: A Model for Community Development and Inclusion
The Oakland City Council approved legislation to authorize the City Administrator to enter into a Purchase and Sale Agreement with the African American Sports and Entertainment Group (AASEG) for the sale of the City of Oakland’s half of the Coliseum site. Seven councilmembers voted “Yes.” District 5 City Councilmember Noel Gallo abstained.
Coliseum’s New Life Advances
On June 12, the Oakland City Council unanimously approved an initial agreement with the African American Sports & Entertainment Group to purchase the city’s 50% share of the Coliseum property for $105 million. This clears the way for development rights of the city’s largest public land site to an Oakland-based, African American development group—a first in the city’s 170-year history.

ACC Officially Welcomes Cal, SMU and Stanford to the League
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference continues to ACCOMPLISH GREATNESS with the addition of three world-class institutions in the University of California, Berkeley (Cal), Southern Methodist University (SMU) and Stanford University as full members with full voting participation. SMU’s first official day in the ACC is July 1, 2024, while Cal and Stanford will become official members on August 2, 2024. All three institutions will begin conference competition this fall.

Jovan Blacksher Jr. Joins Golden Bears
BERKELEY – Jovan Blacksher Jr., a former All-Western Athletic Conference first-team selection, has signed to play for the California men's basketball program, head coach Mark Madsen announced Monday. Blacksher spent the past five seasons at Grand Canyon and will join the Golden Bears as a graduate student for his final year of collegiate eligibility in 2024-25. Blacksher, the 2022-23 WAC Preseason Player of the Year and a two-time All-WAC selection, was recently granted a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA, making him eligible for a sixth season of college basketball. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound guard started all 97 possible games through his first three-plus seasons at Grand Canyon before suffering a knee injury on Jan. 5, 2023, that sidelined him for the next 11 months.

MORAGA, Calif. - On Monday, July 1st, Saint Mary's men's golf alum Blake Hathcoat won a playoff hole to finish 5-under-par in the John Deere Classic qualifier to help solidify his second career PGA Tour start later this week at TPC Deere Run. Hathcoat was just 2-under heading into the final two holes of Monday's qualifier and was able to chip in for eagle on 17 and then birdie 18 to propel himself into a four-way playoff. His birdie on the first playoff hole earned him a qualifying spot for this week's John Deere Classic, his second career tour appearance.
