RICHMOND, Ind. (WDTN) — A bridge over I-70 will be renamed in memory of Richmond K-9 Officer Seara Burton, who was killed in the line of duty.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will officially name the Chester Boulevard Bridge in honor of fallen officer Seara Burton. The bridge on US 27 over Interstate 70 will even be on the side of town where Burton was from.

Richmond community still mourns 1 year after Seara Burton’s death

Seara was a Richmond Police Department K-9 officer that was fatally shot while responding to a traffic stop in 2022. Since then, the local community has continually worked to ensure her legacy lives on.

“Officer Seara Burton’s dedication, bravery, and ultimate sacrifice have left an indelible mark on our community. Her commitment to service and her unwavering courage in the line of duty are reminders of the profound impact one individual can have,” Richmond PD said in a release.

A ceremony will be held to commemorate the official naming on Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. Richmond PD says everyone is welcome to attend the event, held at the Police and Fire Training Center at 1740 South 8th Street.

“Let us come together to remember Officer Seara Burton and to ensure that her memory lives on forever,” the department said.
