RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The City of Richmond is enhancing community mobility by expanding transportation options through the north and south of James River.

On July 2, officials announced an upcoming bike lane project along Westover Hills Boulevard, Park Drive and Blanton Avenue. The project focuses on street upgrades and provides important connections to the city’s bike network, expanding accessibility and improving safety for people walking.

Richmond resident Whit Clements said he and his daughter Holland love biking together and the project is a great way to keep bikers safe.

“It’ll allow people that live on Westover Hills Boulevard to have parking in front of their house and not on the side streets anymore,” Clements said. “It’ll give bikers a little more separation from the traffic and you’ll see an increase in bikers.”

    Holland echoed those thoughts.

“A lot of people don’t like biking on these roads because it’s much more dangerous,” Holland said. “But if they have bike lanes — a lot of people like biking with bike lanes because it’s a way where cars can’t just get to you.”

Phase one of the project will start at Westover Hills Boulevard near Riverside Drive to Dunston Avenue and 49th Street. Phase two will begin at Park Drive and Blanton Avenue beginning at Pump House Drive to French Street.

Construction is expected to be finished by this fall.
