Richmond's viral hangover cure combines rosé and red Gatorade

Richmond's unlikely hangover cure involves rosé, red Gatorade and a man named Joe.

The big picture: The Roséderade at Joe's Inn in the Fan went viral on X in May for being a $10 cocktail that combines rosé with red Gatorade. It's also served over ice with a lime.

    • So obviously we ordered three (we figured out the location because the menu was wildly recognizable).
    • Then we paired it with a classic Joe's Inn breakfast sandwich: the Nickwich.
    • That one has two fried eggs, Provolone, crispy bacon and tomatoes on white, wheat or rye and comes with home fries. $9.95.

Zoom in: On a recent visit, staffers said the drink has been on the menu for years, brought over from a forgotten former bartender who called it the ideal hangover remedy — which makes sense.

    • It's a little hair of the dog pumped with electrolytes.
    • Then the Nickwich comes in with protein and carbs.

Fun fact: It seems Joe's doesn't always keep Gatorade in stock, so if you order the Roséderade, don't be surprised to see your bartender scurry across the street to Shields Market to stock up on the main ingredient.

Sabrina's thought bubble: I went the mocktail route, which basically just means I was drinking red Gatorade with lime. I felt hydrated, so I can't complain.

Karri's thought bubble : I mocked Sabrina relentlessly for ordering a two-ingredient cocktail sans half of it, but after a few sips, I went the same route — except I asked for the rosé to be subbed for Sauvignon Blanc.

    • Fine. I just ordered a separate glass of wine.

The bottom line: We think the best way to improve this cocktail is not to offer it, but if they're insistent, a little effervescence via some bubbly would help. Probably.

    • The Nickwich, however, should stay forever.
