What makes StormTracker8 Richmond’s most accurate forecast?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — StormTracker8 has been named Richmond’s most accurate forecast for the seventh year in a row. Meteorologists Matt DiNardo and John Bernier sat down with WeatheRate founder and president Bruce Fixman to find out more.

WeatheRate takes weather forecasts throughout the country and evaluates their accuracy on many parameters, including temperature, sky cover, precipitation, strong wind, dense fog and more.

WeatheRate’s roots go deep, as Fixman recalls his long-standing interest in meteorology.

“I knew since the age of 5 years old that I was going to be a meteorologist when I grew up, so I went out and got a degree in meteorology and spent years doing forecasting,” Fixman explained.

Fixman further described that after he continued to hear television stations in the area claiming to be the most accurate, he became determined to figure out a way to measure the accuracy of the stations against each other.

WeatheRate utilizes a team of meteorologists who collect the forecasts and look back upon the actual weather conditions to see which meteorologists were correct. The team then runs a scoring algorithm that shows who is the most accurate in each city.

“The lower the score is the most accurate forecast; it’s kind of like golf,” Fixman said.

Meteorologists can check their score throughout the year to see how they’re doing.

In regard to the accuracy of StormTracker8 Meteorologists, Fixman assures that viewers can trust their forecasts.

“They know what they’re doing. If you want to know what to dress the kids in for school tomorrow morning, or if it’s going to rain tomorrow or be a beautiful day, when severe weather threatens, viewers should turn to StormTracker8,” Fixman said.
