Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The City of Richmond on Wednesday provided an update on the sewage leaks which resulted in a high amount of E. coli in the James River.

City officials say it has been determined that the two leaks which occurred earlier this month were not connected. Temporary fixes are being put in place while work continues on a long-term solution.

The leak which took place on July 2 was “related to a wet weather event and was exacerbated by a stormwater connection from an adjacent commercial property,” according to the city. The second was reported on July 15, and crews quickly began the process of installing a temporary patch and inflatable plugs to close off segments of the sewer line from water flow.

Testing and monitoring will continue to determine when the recreational water advisory for the James between the Manchester Bridge and Osbourne Landing can be lifted.
