BAKERSFIELD, Calif., (KGET) — It has been five years since Ridgecrest’s 6.4 and 7.1 magnitude earthquakes shook Kern.

The two momentous quakes changed the way seismologists and geologists view earthquakes especially on the matter of questioning how big earthquakes can get.

First 5 Kern to distribute $15 million dollars over 3 years for early childhood programs

By the huge collection of data on the 7.1 earthquake, scientists now know the expectation of earthquakes happening only in one fault plate is false as the data demonstrates an earthquake can occur through multiple faults.

For big earthquakes, Emily Fisher, geologist, suggests thinking ahead. In case of a 3-day scenario where no electricity or running water would be available, every home should have an earthquake kit with survival essentials.
