BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Ridgecrest Police Department will be in full force Saturday into Sunday looking for impaired drivers, according to the department.

Ridgecrest police will be out July 6 from 7 p.m. to Sunday at 3 a.m. Officers are reminding the community that impaired driving can be caused by various substances not just alcohol. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also limit your driving abilities.

Consuming cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes may be legal in California, but driving while high is illegal. First-time DUI drivers can face a $13,500 bill and a suspended license. A dangerous combo to have as Kern County’s extreme heat wave is expected to last another week.

“Impaired driving is preventable,” Sergeant Erik Hallmark said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
