Mustangs Carmichael Crowned Tucci 2024 CPL Hitter of the Year
The Coastal Plain League announced today that Lucas Carmichael of the Martinsville Mustangs has been selected as the 2024 CPL Hitter of the Year presented by Tucci. “It is an honor to be acknowledged as Hitter of the Year in the Coastal Plain League, which has really talented hitters throughout,” said Carmichael. “This could not have been accomplished without the complete efforts of a special team and coaching staff all season long. Further, it is a testament to the quality of the Martinsville Mustangs organization and their dedication to providing inspired baseball for their players every season.”
Trapp Named 2024 CPL Broadcaster of the Year
The Coastal Plain League announced today that the voice of the Martinsville Mustangs, Riley Trapp, has been named the CPL Broadcaster of the Year for the 2024 season. “It is truly humbling to be able to represent Martinsville and the CPL with this award,” said Trapp. “I’d like to thank Jason Davis and Joe Haynes for having faith in me. I’d also like to thank Connor Akeman, who not only hired me but helped me every step of the way and made this summer better. With Connor being a broadcaster himself, he took a chance on me, and while I don’t think I will ever be able to fill his shoes, I hope I was able to live up to the standard he set originally. I want to thank Brandon Nania, Mason Gary, Hunter Steel and all the boys for accepting me as a part of the team, as they made my job so easy with the way they played day in and day out. I also want to thank Ty Hairston, our producer for putting up with me all season long. He is the best producer in the CPL, and we are truly lucky to have him in Martinsville. Finally, I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ as without Him, none of this would be possible.”
Laurel Park picks and ponderings: August 16, 2024
Late Pick 5 — $0 other handicapping here!. RACE 1: CLAIMING $20,000 (CONDITIONED), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/8 MILES (GRASS) We’re kicking off a very busy final weekend of the season with conditioned claimers on the grass. #1 David’s Prospec (20-1) turned in some solid efforts towards the end of grass season last year, racing near the pace and holding on for shares at good prices. He didn’t do much at this level first off an eight-month break last out, but that was at 5 1/2 furlongs, suggesting that that race was being used as a prep for a spot like this one. He should run much better going longer, and has some speed in a race without much of it. #3 Silverbullettwenty (5-2) finished a hard-charging third in his grass debut last out, in a race where he got a hot pace to close into. Even though there isn’t as much speed this time around, he’s shown some tactical foot in the past, suggesting that he can sit near the leaders and strike. #5 Class Wizard (6-1) gets his sixth different rider in his last six starts; in this case, Jevian Toledo. He exits the same race as Silverbullettwenty, and closed only mildly off that hot pace. That said, he’s a very consistent sort who rarely turns in a bad effort, and should get up for at least a slice.
