TTB Establishes Contra Costa AVA, Expands AVAs
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) officially approved the establishment of the Contra Costa Viticultural Area, along with modifications to the San Francisco Bay and Central Coast viticultural areas in March 2024, with the ruling becoming effective on April 15. The Contra Costa Winegrowers Association said, “This landmark decision marks a significant milestone for the wine industry and the entire agricultural community in the region and underscores the unique characteristics of Contra Costa County’s viticultural landscape. Establishing the Contra Costa Viticultural Area and modifying the San Francisco Bay and Central Coast Viticultural Areas not only celebrates the rich viticultural heritage of the region but also provides winemakers and grape growers with increased recognition and marketing opportunities.” Contra Costa’s AVA acreage is 167,146.

Person charged with firebombing UC Berkeley police car pleads not guilty
Casey R. Goonan, the Pleasant Hill resident suspected in a series of arsons at UC Berkeley, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Goonan, 34, was initially charged with a single count of using fire or explosives to damage the property of an institution receiving federal aid. A federal grand jury has since returned an indictment against Goonan adding one count each of possession of an unregistered firearm and using fire or explosives to damage property used in, or affecting, interstate commerce, court records show.
