An Endangered Texas Species is Fighting Its Way From the Edge of Extinction
An endangered species is slowly working its way back from the edge of extinction in the woods of Central Texas. Four families of red cockaded woodpeckers have laid successful broods in the W.D. Jones State Forest in Conroe, Texas. The chicks are a sign of success for the endangered species and are being fed and cared for by all adult members of the breeding community.

Officer seizes drugs and firearms during traffic stop in Lewisville
LEWISVILLE, Texas — An early morning traffic stop on July 16, 2024, led to the seizure of drugs and firearms, according to the Lewisville Police Department. Officer Huff, assigned to patrol, stopped a vehicle after observing the driver commit a hazardous traffic violation. During the investigation, Officer Huff located and seized approximately 1.5 pounds of marijuana, three handguns, and a significant amount of cash. The driver was arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

After the City Council’s May vote to dissolve longtime North Texas EMS provider MedStar and move to a fire-based system, the city began looking at how best to bring MedStar EMTs and paramedics into the fold. In order to make that happen, representatives from the city, the fire department’s union and MedStar sat down July 12 to discuss needed changes to the collective bargaining agreement that governs fire employee rights. At the top of the list: tweaking how firefighters are defined.
