As Evanston’s annual Fourth of July parade approaches, people are staking out the best places to park their seats. Although the celebration is still two days away, it’s never too early to secure a prime viewing spot along the parade route.

Before there was the Juneteenth parade, Evanston’s main observance of independence was the Fourth of July parade on Central Street. After 50 years of being an exclusively North Evanston institution, in 1973 Celebration Manager Garth J. Conley Jr. encouraged all civic, social and religious organizations to enter the parade. The day’s events would be characterized as the “Evanston 4th of July Celebration,” not the “North Evanston 4th of July Celebration.”

So when he heard about an opportunity to supply Lincoln Elementary, Blackstone Elementary, and Northbrook School with solar panels, he brought it to the school board’s attention and it quickly hopped on the idea.
Village of Niles Extends Vehicle Sticker Deadline to August 15
Due to construction at Village Hall and the Village’s recent cybersecurity incident, Mayor George D. Alpogianis and the Board of Trustees of the Village of Niles today announced a 45-day extension to the deadline for displaying 2024-2025 vehicle stickers. Instead of requiring stickers to be displayed by July 1, stickers must now be displayed by August 15. The Village of Niles appreciates the cooperation of the public and all those who have already purchased their sticker.
Longtime educator honored in street-naming ceremony
Longtime Evanston educator Oliver Ruff’s legacy will live forever on Dobson Street, now also known as Oliver A. Ruff Way. Community members, elected officials, educators, family, clergy and more gathered on Dobson in South Evanston on Saturday, June 29, to honor Ruff, who has served as a public school teacher, assistant principal and principal for 36 years. Hundreds sat along the street and poured onto the sidewalks as speakers made their way to a podium to herald Ruff’s tremendous impact on the Evanston community.

Mosquito Spraying Scheduled for the Evening of July 1st
Clarke Mosquito will be performing a Village-wide spray for mosquitoes the evening of July 1st, weather permitting. Residents may call the Clarke Mosquito Hotline at 630-671-3100 and ask to be added to the "Prior Notification List" for the Village of Vernon Hills. Residents will be asked to provide their name, address, and phone number, and this will allow them to receive a phone call from Clarke the day of the Village-wide spray.
