Man dies in workplace accident at Michigan automotive manufacturing facility
(CBS DETROIT) - A 36-year-old man died after an equipment malfunction at a Michigan automotive manufacturing facility, just days before the facility was scheduled to begin the closing process, officials said.On Monday, deputies responded to Dexter Stamping at 1013 Thorrez Road in Jackson County after receiving a report of a dead employee. The worker, a die setter, was transporting and lifting a die with a crane when the swivel bolt broke, according to the Labor and Economic Opportunity. This caused the corner of the die to strike the ground and the top half to separate, crushing the man. The incident report revealed that the swivel bolt wasn't fully threaded into the die. The incident happened just days before the facility was scheduled to close permanently. The first round of layoffs was planned for July 17, with the final layoffs happening by July 31. All employees at the facility are impacted by this closure, according to the automotive manufacturing facility. So far this year, there have been 14 workplace deaths reported to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). There were 36 workplace-related deaths in 2023, and the lowest number of workplace deaths in a year was in 2009, with 24 deaths.

Jackson, Mich. (WKHM, Greg O’Connor) — A workplace accident killed a 36-year-old die setter yesterday at Dexter Stamping off W. Michigan Ave. in Jackson. MIOSHA is investigating the accident, per their initial report. The die setter was in the process of transporting and lifting a die using a crane when the die somehow broke loose and the worker was crushed to death.
Jackson home hit by single bullet in late night shots fired incident
JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - Jackson police said a single bullet hit a home during a shots fired incident late Tuesday. Police said they were called out to the 500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. near Franklin Street in Jackson at 11:11 p.m. Jackson officials said they had identified someone involved in the shooting, but after they were interviewed, they were released by police.
Man, 19, sentenced in drunken driving deaths of 16-year-old sister, friend
LANSING, MI – A 19-year-old man has been sentenced in the drunken driving deaths of his 16-year-old sister and her friend, WILX reports. Lily Klages and Amanda Blue died in a car crash around 3 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2023, the report said. Elijah Klages, then-18, was driving. His blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit. He was driving 60 to 80 mph in a 25-mph zone when he crashed into parked cars in Holt.
Nessel reviews fatal police shooting, finds officers acted in self defense
On Monday, the Department of Attorney General announced it has concluded the review of the December 1, 2023, officer involved shooting death of Stephen Luis Romero, 33, of Lansing, without issuing charges against the officers involved, finding they acted in self-defense. An investigation of the shooting incident was conducted by the Michigan State Police. It is the policy of Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office to request the Department of Attorney General review all fatal shootings by officers in Ingham County for the possibility of misconduct or criminal wrongdoing.
